Non-binary identity is beautifully diverse, and so is non-binary style. You might gravitate toward androgynous looks, or you might love traditionally feminine pieces one day and masculine the next. You may prefer clothing that completely transcends gender categories altogether. All of these expressions are valid, authentic, and worthy of celebration.

As a queer stylist who’s had the privilege of working with incredible non-binary clients, I’ve learned that the best fashion advice is about finding clothes that help you express your most authentic self, no matter what that looks like for you.

Today, I want to share some of my favorite brands and styling tips that support gender-expansive ways of dressing, because everyone deserves to feel confident and seen in their clothes.

The Real Talk About Non-Binary Fashion

The fashion industry has been slow to catch up to the reality that gender exists on a spectrum. For too long, we’ve been stuck with rigid “men’s” and “women’s” sections that don’t serve people whose identities exist outside those narrow boxes.

The good news is that more and more brands are recognizing that great design isn’t gendered. They’re creating pieces that focus on fit, comfort, and style rather than who they think should wear them. They still haven’t always changed the way they categorize clothes, but this is a work in progress, and conversations like these, I am hopeful, will continue to change the fashion space. 

What Makes Clothing Truly Gender-Expansive?

The best brands offer sizing that works across different body types and proportions, rather than assuming all customers fit traditional gendered sizing standards.

Founded by Adelle Renaud and Olympic champion Erin McLeod, they’ve been challenging fashion norms since 2012 with their upcycled, limited-edition styles

Building Your Non-Binary Wardrobe

Start with Versatile Basics
Focus on pieces that can be styled multiple ways:

• Button-down shirts that can be worn loose, tucked, or tied
• Quality t-shirts and tank tops in neutral colors
• Layering pieces like cardigans or blazers
• Comfortable undergarments that create the silhouette you want

Non-binary style often plays with traditional proportions in exciting ways:

• Try oversized tops with fitted bottoms, or vice versa
• Experiment with cropped pieces and high-waisted bottoms
• Layer different lengths and textures
• Use belts, tucking, and styling tricks to create different silhouettes

Undergarments can completely change how clothes fit and how you feel:

Don’t limit yourself to one section of the store. Some of the best looks come from combining pieces from different gendered sections to create something uniquely you.

Sizes vary wildly between brands and even between different sections of the same store. Pay attention to measurements and fit rather than the number on the tag.

Create Your Signature Elements
Maybe it’s a particular type of jacket, a specific shoe style, or the way you layer accessories. Having signature elements helps create a cohesive personal style that feels authentically you.

Comfort is Key
The best style choice is always the one that makes you feel comfortable and confident. If something doesn’t feel right, don’t force it- there are plenty of other options out there.
