Raise your hand if you have ever felt personally victimized by your closet.
You don’t have to continue to stand by your closet door waiting for the right outfit to magically appear to you. I’m sure it’s already in there, but it’s hidden behind the “other stuff”. So, this post is to help you do your own closet edit.
What’s a closet edit?
A closet edit involves going through your wardrobe and evaluating the individual pieces that you currently own.
To do your own closet edit, you’ll need to be in a decisive mood, a decent amount of free time, and an action plan for the pieces you are no longer keeping. (If none of that sounds appealing to you, or you would prefer some help, click here).
Now, how to begin…
Start at one end/side of your closet. It doesn’t matter which side. Go through every single clothing item one by one, and ask yourself the following questions:
- Does it fit?
- When was the last time I wore it?
- Does it have major sentimental value?
- Do I love it?
You would be surprised at how much you can get rid of just from asking those four questions.
When I tell people, “toss it”, it’s more of the mindset that it “doesn’t have to go home, but it can’t stay here”. Meaning, you don’t have to throw it away, but you shouldn’t be wearing it out of the house anymore. For example, a sweater that was once worn in the winter could be repurposed to be worn as a cozy “around the house” sweater.
“Toss it” could mean donating it, giving it to a friend, or you could bring it to one of the many stores that are now recycling clothes and fabric responsibly!
This article gives a whole list of stores and what they accept in exchange for store discounts, gift cards, etc.

Hopefully, the flow chart and those 4 questions will help you look at your closet a little bit differently! You should love all of the clothes that you own.
If your closet doesn’t give you warm and fuzzy feelings about your wardrobe, it’s either time to do your own closet edit or hire a professional.
