The internet is FLOODED with clothing style labels.
Cottagecore. Tomboy.
Coastal grandmother. ‘Clean girl’ aesthetic.
Sporty. Old money.
And every few weeks, there’s a new one trending on TikTok.
If you’re here, you’re likely exploring your own style and aesthetic. You don’t need to fit into any one box, but knowing some of the different clothing styles can be helpful as you begin to hone in on your own unique style.
In this guide, I’m breaking down the major clothing styles- what they look like, and how to know if one (or a mix of several) is calling your name.
THE MAJOR CLOTHING STYLES (AND HOW TO KNOW IF THEY’RE YOU)
Classic Style
The vibe: Timeless, polished, put-together without trying too hard
Key pieces: Tailored blazers, white button-downs, well-fitted trousers, pencil skirts, trench coats, loafers, simple pumps, structured handbags, patterns like stripes and polka dots
Style icons: Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, Amal Clooney, Meghan MarkleYou’ll vibe with this style if: You’d rather invest in one perfect shirt than five trendy tops, classic style might be your lane. You appreciate clean lines, excellent tailoring, and pieces that look just as good in five years. You’re not interested in chasing trends- you want a wardrobe that just works.
What about colors? While many different clothing style categories come with a ‘color palette’, I didn’t include that here because your color palette should instead match your unique undertone and color season. For example, a classic color palette has a lot black, grey and pops of red. If you’re a soft autumn like me, that color palette isn’t doing me any favors. Find your color season here.

Minimalist Style
The vibe: Less is more. Intentional. Clean. Unfussy.
Key pieces: Simple silhouettes, monochromatic outfits, quality basics, sleek sneakers, minimal jewelry, structured bags in neutral tones
Style icons: Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Sofia Richie Grainge
Color Choices: Monochrome or limited color palette. Rarely mixes more than 2-3 colors in one outfit.
You’ll vibe with this style if: You find peace in simplicity. You’re not interested in loud prints or excessive details. You want your clothes to feel like an elevated uniform- easy, repeatable, unfussy.
Styling note: Minimalist doesn’t automatically mean boring- it’s about intentionality. The cut, fit, and quality of your pieces matter MORE because there’s nowhere to hide behind embellishments.

Bohemian (Boho) Style
The vibe: Free-spirited, relaxed, earthy, artistic
Key pieces: Flowy maxi dresses, wide-leg pants, peasant blouses, fringe details, embroidered pieces, layered jewelry, leather sandals, woven bags
Style Icons: Stevie Nicks, Florence Welch
You’ll vibe with this style if: You value comfort and self-expression equally. You’re not constrained by conventional fashion rules- you love texture, layers, and pieces with a story. You’re drawn to vintage and thrifted pieces, and you layer jewelry without thinking about it.
Color analysis tip: Bohemian style works beautifully for Autumns (those warm earthy tones!) and Springs (who can rock the brighter boho prints). Summers and Winters can adapt boho by choosing cooler-toned versions- think lavender instead of rust, cool grey instead of warm tan.

Edgy/Rock Style
The vibe: Bold, rebellious, confident, unapologetic
Key pieces: Leather jackets, moto boots, ripped jeans, band tees, studded details, combat boots, dark denim, statement belts
Style Icons: Joan Jett, Ruby Rose, Lenny Kravitz
You’ll vibe with this style if: You want your style to have an attitude. You’re not afraid of standing out. You probably had (or wanted) a rebellious phase, you value individuality over fitting in, and you own many band t-shirts and leather jackets.
Styling note: Edgy doesn’t have to mean head-to-toe black leather. One leather jacket over a floral dress? That’s edgy with softness. Combat boots with a midi skirt? Same energy.

Romantic/Feminine Style
The vibe: Soft, delicate, pretty, graceful
Key pieces: Flowy dresses, lace details, ruffles, silk blouses, A-line skirts, delicate jewelry, ballet flats, pastel colors
Style Icons: Elle Fanning, Natalie Portman
You’ll vibe with this style if: You love embracing softness. You’re drawn to details like lace, embroidery, and delicate prints. You want your clothes to feel gentle and beautiful- and you probably have a Pinterest board full of flowy dresses.
Styling note: Romantic style is more about texture than color. Lace, silk, chiffon, embroidery- these tactile elements create the aesthetic, even in unexpected colors.

Streetwear Style
The vibe: Urban, casual, trend-aware, comfortable
Key pieces: Oversized hoodies, graphic tees, joggers, high-top sneakers, bomber jackets, baseball caps, crossbody bags, athleisure pieces
Style Icons: Pharrell Williams, Billie Eilish
You’ll vibe with this style if: You want comfort without sacrificing style, and oversized fits feel more natural than fitted pieces. You’re aware of trends but you make them your own and sneaker culture speaks to you. You value functional pieces that still look intentional.
Styling note: Layering is where streetwear gets interesting. Hoodie under a jacket, long tee under short tee- play with it.

Preppy Style
The vibe: Clean-cut, polished, collegiate, put-together
Key pieces: Cable knit sweaters, collared shirts, pleated skirts, blazers, loafers, boat shoes, tennis skirts, argyle prints
Style Icons: Jackie Kennedy, Blair Waldorf
You’ll vibe with this style if: You appreciate a polished, pulled-together aesthetic. You probably loved (or still love) back-to-school shopping, and love looking put-together. You’ve uttered the phrase “tennis anyone?” at least once, even ironically, and Blair Waldorf or someone from a J.Crew catalog could be your style icon.
Styling note: Preppy style loves an accessory! Think headbands, a silk scarf tied just right, the perfect loafers, a structured handbag- these finishing touches elevate the whole look.

Maximalist Style
The vibe: More is more. Bold. Playful and fearless.
Key pieces: Bold prints, clashing patterns, statement accessories, bright colors, layers on layers, unique vintage finds
Style Icons: The iconic Carrie Bradshaw, Gabby from Shrinking, Iris Apfel
You’ll vibe with this style if: You view getting dressed as creative expression. You’re not afraid of color, pattern, or standing out. Your closet is a rainbow and you find joy in bold combinations that “shouldn’t” work but somehow do.
Color analysis tip: When you’re mixing multiple colors and patterns, having a cohesive palette keeps everything from looking chaotic. Choose colors within your season and suddenly even your boldest combinations look intentional.

Casual/Athleisure Style
The vibe: Comfortable, practical, easy, active
Key pieces: Leggings, joggers, oversized sweatshirts, sneakers, athletic tanks, zip-up hoodies, baseball caps
Style Icons: Princess Diana, Serena Williams,
You’ll vibe with this style if: Your lifestyle demands comfort and function. Maybe you’re active or have young kids, or you value ease over everything else. Leggings are pants, and you’ll die on that hill.
Styling note: Athleisure doesn’t mean sloppy. Well-fitted pieces in your color season, layered intentionally, can look polished and put-together.

Vintage/Retro Style
The vibe: Nostalgic, unique, curated, timeless
Key pieces: Depends on the era- 70s bell bottoms, 80s power suits or 90s slip dresses. Thrifted and vintage finds.
Style Icons: Dita Von Teese, Lana Del Rey, Donald GloverYou’ll vibe with this style if: You love the romance of bygone eras. You appreciate craftsmanship and unique pieces, and spend hours in thrift stores. People often ask “where did you get that?” and you love saying “it’s vintage.”
Styling note: Tailoring is key here- vintage pieces rarely fit perfectly off the rack. Hemming those 70s flares, taking in that 90s blazer, adjusting that 80s dress- making the clothes fit your body is what makes vintage look intentional.

WHY UNDERSTANDING DIFFERENT CLOTHING STYLES MATTERS
Before we dive into specific aesthetics, let’s talk about why this even matters.
Understanding different clothing styles gives you vocabulary for what you’re drawn to. Instead of saying “I like this but I don’t know why,” you can identify patterns. “Oh, I’m consistently drawn to structured pieces and neutral colors- that’s minimalist energy.”
It helps you communicate with stylists, salespeople, and even yourself. When you can articulate your style preferences, shopping becomes more intentional and less overwhelming.
It gives you permission to experiment. Maybe you’ve been dressing one way for years because it felt safe. Exploring different styles might reveal that you’re ready for something new.
And spoiler alert: you’re allowed to mix and match styles.
You don’t have to be 100% minimalist or 100% bohemian or 100% anything. The most interesting personal styles are blends. Classic with an edgy edge. Romantic with modern touches. Minimalist but with maximalist accessories.
Your style is YOURS. These categories are simply tools to help you understand it better.
HOW TO IDENTIFY YOUR CLOTHING STYLE
Most people are a mix of styles. Your job is figuring out which combination feels like YOU.
Try this exercise:
- Look at the styles above and write down the 2-3 that resonate most
- Not what you currently wear, but what genuinely excites you
- Not what you currently wear, but what genuinely excites you
- Go through your closet and pull out your 5 favorite pieces
- The ones you reach for when you want to feel like yourself
- What styles do they represent?
- Create a mood board (Pinterest, saved Instagram posts, whatever)
- Save 20-30 outfits that make you feel something
- Look for patterns- are they mostly one style? A mix?
- Write down 3 words that describe how you want to FEEL in your clothes a style statement
- For example:
- Comfortable, creative, free → Bohemian vibes
- Bold, unapologetic, edgy → Edgy/rock style
- Playful, colorful, expressive → Maximalist energy
- For example:
Your style is the intersection of what you’re drawn to visually, what feels comfortable on your body, and what makes you feel confident.
MIXING DIFFERENT CLOTHING STYLES
The BEST personal styles are combinations. Here’s how to mix styles without looking like you got dressed in the dark:

Choose a dominant style (60-70% of your wardrobe)
This is your foundation. Maybe you’re primarily minimalist- simple silhouettes, neutral colors, clean lines.
Add a secondary style (20-30%)
This is what makes your style uniquely yours. Maybe you’re minimalist with romantic touches- that means mostly simple pieces, but you add a lace camisole or a flowy skirt.
Use the third style as accents (10%)
These are your statement pieces. Maybe you’re minimalist-romantic but you have one edgy leather jacket that you throw on to shift the whole vibe.
Example combinations that work:
- Classic + Edgy = Polished with an attitude (blazer + band tee + loafers)
- Minimalist + Bohemian = Clean but artistic (simple silhouettes in earthy tones with textured accessories)
- Romantic + Streetwear = Soft but urban (flowy dress + chunky sneakers)
- Preppy + Casual = Put-together but comfortable (collared shirt + joggers + clean sneakers)
The key is intentionality. When you’re mixing styles, make sure it looks like a choice, not an accident.
What About Those Trending Aesthetics?
Remember all those trends we mentioned at the beginning? Cottagecore, coastal grandmother, clean girl aesthetic, old money, tomboy?
They are usually new labels for foundational style mixes:
- Cottagecore = Romantic + Bohemian (soft, flowy, nature-inspired pieces with vintage touches)
- Coastal Grandmother = Classic with a Casual Twist (linen button-downs, wide-leg pants, neutral tones, relaxed but polished)
- Clean Girl Aesthetic = Minimalist (sleek, simple, monochrome, low-maintenance but intentional)
- Old Money = Classic + Preppy (timeless pieces, quality over trends, understated luxury)
- Tomboy = Athleisure/Sporty + Casual (athletic-inspired, comfortable, oversized silhouettes)
BUILDING A WARDROBE THAT MIXES STYLES
Once you know your style blend, here’s how to build a cohesive wardrobe:
1. Start with your color season palette
Choose 5-7 colors from your season that you love. This is your foundation- every piece you buy should fit into this palette.
2. Identify your dominant style and buy basics accordingly
If you’re primarily classic, invest in well-fitted neutrals. If you’re primarily bohemian, stock up on flowy, earthy pieces.
3. Add secondary style pieces strategically
These are your “flavor” pieces. If you’re classic with romantic touches, add a lace blouse, a soft pink blazer, and delicate jewelry.
4. Use your accent style for statement pieces
This is where you have the most fun. One leather jacket, a pair of bold sneakers, a maximalist printed scarf. These shift your whole vibe without requiring a wardrobe overhaul.
5. Make sure everything works together
Because all your pieces are in your color palette, they’ll naturally coordinate. The bohemian scarf will work with the classic blazer because they’re both in your colors.
READY TO DEFINE YOUR STYLE?
Understanding different clothing styles helps you to explore what style resonates, what doesn’t, and what combination feels most like YOU.
Maybe you’re discovering you’re not actually minimalist- you’re classic with minimalist leanings. Maybe you’ve been dressing preppy but you’re craving bohemian energy.
All of it is valid and all of it is allowed.
